The disease of addiction and chemical dependency affects both men and women; however, the disease affects women in ways that are much different than those of men. When compared to men, drug and alcohol addiction affects women in many different ways. Typically, women usually present to drug and alcohol treatment centers displaying extremely intense signs and symptoms of addiction accompanied by a higher prevalence of emotional/psychological complications.
Traditionally, barriers to entering drug and alcohol treatment for women have been their life roles. Women will often identify themselves as a part of other relationships, e.g., wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, etc. Therefore, women frequently position caretaking and nurturing roles ahead of their own needs, and may postpone seeking help for their drug and/or alcohol addiction. Negative emotions, such as fear, guilt, shame, embarrassment, and low-self-esteem also discourage addicted women in search of help.

The primary alcohol and drug treatment center experience is individualized, based on the needs of each woman. Alcohol and Drug Addiction treatment and mental health services are integrated, ensuring that co-occurring mental health issues are treated.
