Intensive outpatient recovery, sometimes referred to as IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) or intensive outpatient treatment, is an extremely effective yet flexible way to pursue addiction treatment while still maintaining the normalcy of at-home living.

intensive outpatient program

IOP’s have been recommended and used for various substance abuse or mental health disorders, such as severe depression, drug, and alcohol addiction or eating disorders.

The flexibility of IOP allows clients to experience all the amenities and programs we have to offer while still maintaining the normalcy of at-home living.

This type of treatment is recommended specifically for clients who do not require round the clock supervision or medical detoxification. IOP’s allow those in need of our services to establish and maintain a support group at home that will last long after our program is completed-while also allowing the ability to work, attend church and be with family and friends.

What Types of Therapy are Included in an IOP?

The main focus of IOP is often group therapy. Groups are small (10 or less), confidential and led by clinically certified therapists. Generally, you will be grouped with other clients whose struggles and stories may match your own and whose experiences the group can collectively learn from.

Accountability is a huge part of any recovery, and we believe group support can be key to achieving real change. In addition to general group therapy, clients are walked through different clinical strategies, coping mechanisms and informational sessions including, but not limited to:

  • Introduction to Twelve-Step Programs
  • Skills and strategies to prevent relapse
  • How to find and keep accountability
  • Discovering spirituality as a means to fight addiction
  • Understanding the physiology of mental health and addiction
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Family Counseling
  • Dialectical Behavioral therapy

In addition to group therapy, intensive outpatient programs generally also include weekly meetings with an individual therapist. Again, these clinicians will be board certified and value your privacy, growth, and confidentiality.

Our intake process will help to match you up with a therapist and group that is tailor-made to your needs, then our trained and licensed therapists will decide which methods to pursue. Meanwhile, you will be free to come and go as you please and will have our staff and your family/friends in your corner along the way.

Give Intensive Outpatient Recovery a Chance today!

At Unity Behavioral Health, we understand that not everyone works at the same pace or responds to the same strategies. That is why we are committed to customizing your recovery process whenever possible. We see clients that come into our care at every level of struggle or recovery and we understand that Intensive Outpatient Recovery is not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Often, at the beginning of your entrance into treatment, you will be given daily reminders, tasks or meetings that will help stabilize you for the journey ahead. As you grow and become acclimated to the joys and struggles of recovery, our program grows with you.

We want to emphasize the methods that demonstrate progress and allow you flexibility in choosing how you spend your time, whenever possible. As you show progress in the recovery process, our staff will allow you more freedom while still being available for support however we are needed.

How is an Intensive Outpatient Program Different?

The difference is truly in the name-” Outpatient” denotes the freedom to come and go (albeit on an organized and curated schedule) from our facility. Often IOP resembles a regular workday, with sessions in the morning, different activities, group or individual therapy, and an early afternoon ending.

At a traditional inpatient treatment center, you literally live on campus, under direct and constant supervision. While this can be extremely effective, not everyone needs this level of care or attention. That is why intensive outpatient recovery can be so effective.

Sometimes the freedom to live your life combined with the accountability of trained professionals can be exactly the key to unlocking your recovery.

According to Psychology Today, most IOP type therapy programs require anywhere from 9 to 20 hours a day-generally with greater hours at the beginning stages.

What is The First Step

The first step is admitting you need help, and you have come to the right place. After making contact with the trained professionals at Unity Behavioral Health, the client will receive an intake assessment. This generally consists of a psychological evaluation as well as potential substance tests or questionnaires that will help our clinicians make an appropriate recommendation.

Occasionally, a “detox” period may be necessary as well as potential overnight stays or observation to decide if IOP is right for you. If it is deemed an appropriate course of action, your assessment results will allow us to create a plan that will best suit your needs.

Is Intensive Outpatient Recovery Right For You?

Intensive Outpatient Recovery may be right for you if you struggle with

  • Moderate to severe depression
  • Prolonged eating disorder (Bulemia or anorexia)
  • Alcohol or drug addiction
  • Suicidal ideation or self-harm

We know that the hardest step in any life-change is the first one. That is why we want to provide you with as much information as possible to help you make the right decision for yourself or your loved one.

If any of these describe your pattern of behavior or that of someone you love, please do not hesitate to reach out to our 24-hour helpline at 561-623-8206 or click here to learn more about us.

Is Intensive Outpatient Recovery the Same as Alcoholics Anonymous or a 12 Step Program?

While IOP’s may share some elements with AA or a 12 step program, it is NOT the same thing. In fact, attendance at AA meetings or other similar 12 step programs may be an integral part of your tailored IOP plan.

While Unity Rehab is not a faith-based program, research and results show that the accountability and structure of traditional faith-based programs can lead to great breakthroughs in recovery and spur personal growth.

In addition to these programs, we believe in a holistic and comprehensive approach to your recovery and are committed to providing an experience and results that are not “run of the mill”.

You Are Never Alone in the Fight Against Addiction!

Research has proven that loneliness is one of the leading causes of mental health and addiction issues, but that being surrounded by friends, family, and supporting professionals can drastically improve the recovery rates and reduce relapse. At Unity Behavioral Health, we believe that “it takes a village” and you will never be alone.

We encourage the involvement of family, spouses, siblings, and anyone else in your close inner circle. We would love to have them visit the campus, be aware of your schedule, and even sit in on meetings should you desire it.

At Unity Behavioral Health, we know that not everyone is blessed with that kind of support that is why our professional staff is committed to caring for you in ways that truly go above and beyond. We look forward to becoming a part of your family.

How Much Does an Intensive Outpatient Program Cost?

At UBH, we are committed to transparency, fairness, value but above all-results. We know that some struggles require more time and intensive personal effort than others. Our prices are competitive, transparent, and leave no surprises.

Our trained staff will do their very best to let you know what fees may be incurred from your first communication with our office. Once you come in for your assessment, you will immediately be given an idea of costs, length, and treatment options that you will have every right to accept or refuse. You will never be forced to pay for or attend something against your will.

We also accept many major insurance plans (Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, among others) that offer partial or even full reimbursement. Our dedicated staff will help you work through the payment process and make sure you feel supported along the way.
Do not let perceived cost keep you from seeking the help you need. Contact one of our intake specialists today to get started as soon as possible.
