Ben Affleck made his recent struggles with alcoholism known to the public for the first time since he underwent alcohol abuse treatment in 2001. The actor and Academy award-winning director completed rehabilitation in a Los Angeles, CA recovery center this past March.
This news follows Affleck’s triumphant return to leading man-status in Hollywood, marked by the commercial and critical success of The Town (2010) and Argo (2012), films in which he both starred and directed.
The actor-director said that trouble with alcohol has been something that he has “dealt with in the past and will continue to confront.” He sought treatment of his own free will and hopes to address the “negative stigma” surrounding alcoholism and addiction in general. In a statement, Affleck wrote: “I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step.”
Affleck reported that he plans to focus on being a good father to his three children, along with co-parent and former spouse, Jennifer Garner. We applaud Ben Affleck for his openness about his condition and his attitude towards improving the outlook of those suffering from the same or similar substance abuse disorders.
