American singer, songwriter and actress, Demi Lovato, recently celebrated her fifth year of sobriety. To commemorate the occasion, the superstar took to Instagram to update fans about her progress using the 12-steps program. She posted:
“So grateful. It’s been quite a journey. So many ups and downs. So many times I wanted to relapse but sat on my hands and begged God to relieve the obsession. I’m so proud of myself but I couldn’t have done it without my higher power (God), my family, friends, and everyone else who supported me. Feeling humbled and joyful today. Thank you guys for sticking by my side and believing in me.”
In 2013, Lovato admitted to E! News that she would routinely hide and sneak drug use, adding that she couldn’t go without a line or bump of cocaine for longer than an hour. Lovato would bring cocaine on planes with her and carry around Sprite bottles filled with vodka just to get through the day. She said things began to change when she turned 19.
It was at that point where she determined that her substance abuse was not about being young and rebellious, but about having an addiction problem. She then turned her life over to God and committed to rehab. She has been clean ever since. We commend Lovato for her openness and for remaining committed to her sobriety.
