In an interview on British talk show, The John Ross Show, Grammy Award winning artist, Ed Sheeran discussed his recent cycling accident and his struggles with substance abuse early in his rise to fame. The singer explained that he’d broken both arms while trying to ride down a steep hill, forcing him to cancel some shows. In addition, he admitted to having a hard time adjusting to his fame, falling into destructive substance abuse habits early on in his career.
“I didn’t really have any growing up time into getting famous. All of the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly like, substance abuse,” he said on The John Ross Show. “I never touched anything. I started slipping into it and that’s why I took a year off and buggered off.”
Sheeran said that some of his close friends staged an intervention when they realized his substance abuse was getting out control. He said that he now stays away from substance abuse by focusing on his work.
“I focused on work, and I can’t work under the influence, I can’t write songs under the influence, I can’t perform under the influence, so the more I worked the less that happened,” he said. “I’ve worked my whole life to get to where I am and you can’t lose that over something that you do in your spare time. I didn’t really notice it was happening. It just started gradually happening and then some people took me to one side and were like, calm yourself down.”
